How to Clean Upholstered Furniture to Keep Your Sofa Looking Spotless

Use these upholstery cleaning tips to easily remove stains, prevent wear, and clear off pet hair on your furniture.

Each product we feature has been independently selected and reviewed by our editorial team. If you make a purchase using the links included, we may earn commission.

The upholstered furniture in your living areas can take a lot of wear and tear. Even if you and your family are extra careful, spills and accidents, whether it's a spilled glass of wine or muddy paw prints, are just a part of life. The best way to prevent stains on upholstered furniture, including sofas, chairs, benches, ottomans, and other fabric-covered pieces, isn't by banning food and pets from the living room altogether. You just need to know what to do when stains happen. When you work fast, clean upholstery regularly, and know your fabric, you can handle spills, stains, and other mishaps with ease. When you're tackling a tough stain and removing unsightly pet hair, these tips on how to clean upholstered furniture will help keep your sofas and chairs looking pristine for years to come.

Living room with couch, coffee table, painting

Vacuum Upholstered Furniture Often

Our number one DIY upholstery cleaning tip is to vacuum your upholstered furniture often. Dirt not only affects the appearance of your furniture, but it can also wear away upholstery fibers. Use a clean, dry upholstery attachment, or any stiff-bristle brush, to loosen dried dirt and debris. Use the crevice tool for hard-to-reach nooks and crannies.

Use Baby Wipes to Clean Furniture

Baby wipes are surprisingly effective for quick DIY upholstery cleaning (although you should always test first on an inconspicuous area to make sure they won't damage the fabric). Great for leather, cotton, or polyester upholstery, these wipes offer a gentle mixture of water and soap that contains very little moisture. Keep a travel pack stashed in the living room for instant spot removal whenever spills happen. Baby wipes are also ideal for spot-cleaning rugs. Act quickly on coffee drips and other spills, and the stain will be out before it even has time to set.

Clean Upholstery According to Codes

Refer to your piece's manufacturer instructions and fabric cleaning code for the best way to clean upholstered furniture. "W" means it's OK to use water. Remove the cushion covers and launder according to the manufacturer's instructions. "S" means skip the water and use a nonwater-based solvent, such as alcohol, instead. Spray it on lightly, then blot with a clean white cloth or sponge. "S/W" means you're OK using either solvents or water, and "X" means use neither and vacuum only.

Prevent Stains on Upholstered Furniture

If your furniture doesn't come pretreated with a fabric protector to repel stains, apply one yourself (or have an expert do it for you). If it's already treated, ask the manufacturer how long it will last. "Many of the treatments on the market must be reapplied every few years to retain their stain-fighting powers," says Melissa Homer, chief cleaning officer of MaidPro. Keeping it treated is key in maximizing the life of your furniture, she says.

Clean Upholstered Furniture Gently

Don't scrub upholstered furniture, even when you're dealing with tough, set-in stains. Scrubbing could grind the stain further into the fibers or damage the fabric. It's better to let the stain remover sink in and set, then gently blot away. Use a soft, microfiber cloth for blotting instead of coarse fabric or a bristled brush. If the fibers are stiff after cleaning and drying, use a soft brush to loosen the material.

Use Water Sparingly

"Many people believe that the more moisture you use, the better," says Ron Holt, CEO of Two Maids cleaning service. "This is not always true." Try a specially formulated solvent (water-free) spot remover first. Many upholstery sprays are inexpensive and work well on most stains. If you move on to a water-based approach, Holt says, use it sparingly.

Remove Pet Hair from Upholstered Furniture

If your furry friends like to cozy up on the couch with you, try these tips for cleaning upholstered furniture. To remove pet hair from furniture, put on a pair of rubber gloves and run them over your furniture, says Leslie Reichert of Green Cleaning Coach. "The gloves create static that pulls the hair off to the edge of the piece, where you can easily vacuum it off," she says. You can also create a DIY static spray by mixing water and a small amount of fabric softener. Spray the solution on the furniture and wipe off hair with a cloth. Other effective tools for removing fur from upholstery include furniture brushes and hand vacuums designed for pet hair.

Clean Throw Blankets and Pillows

While cleaning your upholstered furniture, don't forget to wash your throw blankets and throw pillows. When using a washing machine, it's generally best to stick with the gentle cycle on cold. If the pillow covers are removable, throw them in the machine inside-out. Be sure to dry pillows thoroughly, as inner dampness can lead to mold. If you're not sure your pillows are washable, freshen them with a spritz of water spiked with your favorite essential oil, followed by a tumble in the dryer with a couple of tennis balls.

DIY Spot Removers for Upholstery Stains

The sooner you treat a spot, the better your chances of removing it. If you catch it right away, you might be able to get away with simply blotting with a microfiber cloth, says Kenny Schultz of MyClean cleaning service. If water is safe to use on your upholstery, there are also many DIY upholstery cleaning tactics you can try. Vacuum before attempting removal to reduce the risk of spreading the stain, and always test in an inconspicuous spot first. Try these tricks to remove stains from upholstered furniture:

  • General upholstery stain removal: Start with club soda. Dab it on gently with a clean, white cloth. Two more easy options: a little vinegar (left to sit for about 15 minutes before blotting with clear water) or a solution of mild dish soap and water.
  • Grease or oil stains: Sprinkle with salt, let sit, then dab with soap and water. Alternatively, try rubbing alcohol instead of salt.
  • Coffee stains: Blot in a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar with a little dish detergent.
  • Crayon stains: Work in a dab of non-gel toothpaste, then rinse with clear water.
  • Blood stains: Blot with hydrogen peroxide, then water.
  • Red wine stains: Sprinkle with salt. Blot with hydrogen peroxide or lemon juice, then rinse by blotting with water.

How to Calculate the Best Table Size for Your Dining Room

ErikaWittlieb/CC0/Pixabay

Congratulations on your decision to get a new dining room table. Choosing a new style of table can change the whole vibe in your dining area. It's important to choose a table that fits the size of your room so there's room for everyone to walk around. Taking the time to measure the size of your dining room and comparing your open floor space to standard table sizes can help you choose a piece of furniture that's a good fit for your home.

Determine the Size of Your Dining Area

Hook the end of a tape measure to something solid against the wall, like the door trim, or have a helper hold the end against the wall. Measure all the way across the room to the opposite wall. Make a note of this size, and then repeat the measuring process on the other two walls in the room. Multiply the two numbers together to determine the size of the room in square feet. If you're choosing a dining table for a room in a house with an open floor plan, measure to the edge of the area where you want the dining area to end.

Draw the Room

Sketch the room on a sheet of grid paper or enter the dimensions in a 3D room layout planning tool. While a larger open space around the table gives a room a casual, airy feeling, allow a minimum of three feet around the perimeter of the room for walking space. The remaining space in the center of the room is the maximum to allow for a dining table. It's easier to fit a small table into a large room than it is to crowd an oversized table into a tiny room. If you have extra floor space available after placing your dining table, you can adjust the way it's positioned in the room to enhance the flow of foot traffic and increase visual appeal.

Consider Decor Elements Around the Room's Outer Edge

Some pieces of furniture are big enough they're hard to move, making them almost a permanent part of your floor plan. If there are other large furnishings around the outer edge of the room, such as a hutch or curio cabinet, be sure to include the dimensions of those items in your sketch and in your calculations.

The Role of Table Top Shapes in Choosing Table Size

This is a tip you may see at play if you look closely at tabletops for restaurants. This is because restaurant tables are often packed in snugly to provide seating for as many patrons as possible. When space is at a premium — for example if you have a small dining area and can't arrange it to leave floor space around the table — consider a round or oval table. The rounded edges of the tabletop can allow for foot traffic.

Consider a Table That Has a Leaf

Choosing a table that has a leaf is one easy way to accommodate an occasional large group while enjoying the coziness of a small table. Just add the leaf when guests are coming over and remove it when there's a smaller group present. Floor space may be tied up with the leaf is installed, but it's also freed up when you restore the table to its smaller leaf-free size.

A staple for any informal meal, a sturdy breakfast table will last for many years. Here at Furniture Village, we have a fantastic variety of options to suit all tastes and styles. A round breakfast table can be perfect for sociable family meals, while a square design is often better suited for larger groups.

Which material you choose is an important decision – do you opt for a rustic, natural wooden table, or a glass kitchen table to add contemporary style to your decor? Whichever you choose, you'll find that your kitchen table soon becomes a well-loved – and well-used – piece of furniture.

Seating is almost as important as the kitchen table itself. If you're going for wood, pick a sturdy wooden seating solution – pair an oak dining table with a solid wooden bench for a rustic and homely feel at breakfast. Complete the look with some pendant lights and create an inviting space you'll come back to again and again – whether it's breakfast time or not.

It is often said that the dining table is where everyone truly comes together – no distractions, no TV or electronic devices, just quality time and conversation with friends and family. And if that's true, you and your family and friends deserve to be seated on the best possible dining table chairs, which you are sure to find at Furniture Village.

Whether you prefer formal or casual, modern or traditional there are dining chairs to suit every taste. We're proud to offer a huge choice of styles, colours, finishes and upholstery combinations, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding the right dining room chairs for your home.

Use our helpful dining room sizer as you plan your perfect dining room.

Choosing the right material for your dining chair

The right dining chair starts with the frame itself. You might be considering a traditional or rustic country-house look, in which case wooden dining chairs could be the way to go. Think warm, lacquered, hand-crafted wood, beautifully shaped and finished, with solid legs and a curved or slatted back providing both comfort and support.
Looking for a touch more comfort? Consider a version with a built-in seat cushion or a padded back. You can then begin to explore the various colours and upholstery fabrics available. Just take a look at our selection of upholstered dining chairs.
Wood and metal dining chairs feel modern, leaning towards an on-trend industrial style. For the ever-popular Scandi look, hunt out dining room chairs with pale wood frames, unfussy turned legs, and simple curved or slatted backs. These days, you can also find acrylic-framed dining chairs – so contemporary and eye-catching. Cushioning or padding will always add more comfort, with faux leather, real leather and fabric available in so many different colours. Want to really impress your guests? It's hard to top a set of velvet dining chairs.
Faux leather dining chairs offer an affordable and animal-friendly alternative to leather dining chairs. This material is hard-wearing, available in a wide range of colours and easy to wipe clean – handy in any dining room, especially if you have small children but still want to keep your dining room look modern and sophisticated. And you'll find even more choice if you're looking for fabric dining chairs.
If you're spoiled for choice and could do with some expert pointers s, spend some time with our dining table and dining chair buying guide.

Choosing the right style of dining table chair

The style of your dining chairs will also shape the overall look and comfort of the room and is likely to involve as much consideration as the upholstery choice.
Upholstered dining chairs with maximum cushioning might be best if you're like to host lengthy dinner parties. A padded seat with a non-upholstered back that shows the craftsmanship of the frame is a good compromise.
You may also wonder if your dining table chairs should have arms or not. Arms will definitely add support, giving your guests something to lean on, but might be considered too fussy or traditional for some. You could choose an entire set of dining room chairs with arms for a more formal look, or simply place one at each end of the table.
And then there's dining room seating that's not a dining chair at all – the versatile and practical dining bench. These are great for accommodating more people in less space and are often made from wood or metal, or a combination of both. Dining benches also offer a wide choice of upholstery options – just take a look at our faux leather dining benches and our fabric dining benches. Not ready to commit? A combination of dining table chairs and a dining bench is a versatile on-trend seating solution.

Caring for your new dining room chairs

Whatever you choose, take good care of your new dining room chairs by consulting our handy dining furniture care guide. If your chairs are upholstered, be sure to read or upholstery care guide too.

The finishing touches

Every set of dining chairs needs a stunning dining room table. Our collection includes tables in all sizes and styles, including versatile extending dining tables and even space-saving dining tables, perfect for compact kitchen diners and smaller dining rooms.
To make choosing easier, you can always purchase your dining table and chairs as a set, rather than buying individually. And you'll find plenty of other dining room furniture to choose from, including sideboards and display cabinets both of which help to set the tone of your dining room as well as providing storage for tableware.
With all of the furniture in place, you can start to think about accessories. Vases or trinkets can be used as a table centrepiece, with an ornate mirror or wall art as a talking point. Carefully chosen lighting – perhaps a low-hanging ceiling light over the dining table – can create an intimate setting.
